Sorry Football, I’ve Got a Season to Get To

So I heard there was this little thing called a Super Bowl on Sunday night. Excuse me while I blaspheme in honor of true fanship. Thank goodness that’s over with.

Football, I faked it for you as long as I could. I ate the food. I swigged the drinks. I kept my eyes on the big screen. I watched the Packers and the Steelers (and the commercials), and rooted my little heart out for the Jets-decimating Pittsburgh players.

But it was all a lie.

When I had to come up with 64 reasons Pittsburgh rocked for an online article for the Super Bowl, I gave it away.

Ranking atop my list? It was home to the first baseball stadium, the first World Series and the first night game in a World Series. And yes, this was an article about a football game. But I couldn’t help myself.
See, all this pigskin palaver was just a front to get me through the cold winter and the dark days of the year, the days without baseball.

But I can see clearly now. The gridiron’s gone.

And pitchers and catchers report to spring training on Sunday. Did you hear that? I think it was, yes, it must have been, the Hallelujah chorus coming to celebrate.

Because the coming of baseball means so many things to me. It’s the return of spring. It’s bidding farewell to snow (and snow days with the kindergartner). It’s night games on the radio when we’re driving home from being out and about (with no threat of icy roads). It’s professional sports played in New York instead of in a stadium over in Jersey.

It’s the Yankees, and the rest of the teams.

It’s putting my heart on the line for real instead of a half-hearted cheer for a game I only pretend to understand (What down was that? How many are there again? Oh, right, 4, yeah, I remember).

It’s baseball, America’s game for crying out loud.

Sunday, my friends, is just the start. After that, it’s just one month and 15 days until opening day of the Major League Baseball season. I’m ready, are you?

  1. One of the things on my to do list is go watch a baseball game..now you've just made me want to do it even more 😀 Great blog by the way!

  2. I couldn't agree with you more! I faked my way through football season as well, and am counting the days until the season opener (only 45 more!) ~Lisa http://www.BarkTalk.com

  3. A great American game. My dad tried to get all his boys to play baseball. We all started off right but ended up in tennis. Go figure.
