Confession time. My daughter loves the movie Grease. She knows the songs by heart. She frequently requests we watch the DVD.
I am counting on the fact that she doesn’t “get” most of what’s going on on screen. I’ve discovered I’m not the first mom to put myself in this precarious position.
And now, praise Disney, we have help.
Teen Beach Movie, releasing on DVD on July 30.
Yes, it’s almost as bad as it sounds — at least from a mom perspective. The made-for-TV Disney Channel flick is this year’s High School Musical or Camp Rock. You watch it because your kids watch it (hey, I’m being honest).
But that’s the beauty of it — your kids WILL watch it. And with a plot pulled right out of West Side Story (literally, the teenagers land in a film called Wet Side Story), it’s just a sanitized version of Grease.
So when Disney said they were releasing a DVD version of the movie, I was willing to sit down for a dose of it myself (I confess I didn’t watch with her when it came out on TV) to see if moms can handle bringing this home to watch ad infinitum.
The truth? Did I mention how embarrassed we Grease moms are? How desperate?
And how this is the answer we’ve been waiting for?
In Teen Beach Movie, instead of the T-Birds and the Scorpions, there are the bad bikers at war with the clean cut surfers, and then there is a whole lot of Disney singing.
I mentioned you wouldn’t watch it if it weren’t for your kids. That doesn’t mean it’s horrible; I promise. In fact, if you enjoy camp for camp’s sake (think Hairspray), you will actually get a kick out of the over-the-top acting and kitsch.
My daughter, she doesn’t see any of that. She just hears singing, and she gets up and dances around the living room.
My thoughts? Get it for them … but don’t feel like you’re being chased out of your living room.
Are your kids gaga for Grease? Have you tried Teen Beach Movie yet?
Have you “liked” Inside Out Motherhood on Facebook yet?
