How about watching a Christmas flick you probably ignored? It’s a Wonderful Life is a wonderful thing, but the glory of Netflix offers up some seriously good holiday flicks that are woefully under-rated.
Take a look!
- While You Were Sleeping. Sandra Bullock has been crushing on Peter ever since the day she first spotted him buying a ticket for a train. She’s never spoken with him, but the day he accidentally falls in front of the train, she springs into action … and ends up being adopted by his crazy family right in time for the holidays. The best parts: Bullock, obvi, and Jack Warden as Peter’s wise kinda uncle who doesn’t pull any punches.
- Serendipity. John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale accidentally grab the same exact pair of gloves while they’re Christmas shopping, and wouldn’t you know they’re the last pair in the store. So what happens next? An epic date, followed by Beckinsale writing her number in a copy of Love in the Time of Cholera … which Cusack can’t find. The best parts: The frozen hot chocolate at Serendpity, Cusack playing a role with shades of Lloyd Dobler.
- The Ref. Denis Leary a thief whose getaway car takes off without him, leaving him to force an unwitting couple to drive him to safety. Little does he realize said couple is in the marriage from hell, and to protect himself from the cops, he’s got to pretend to be their marriage counselors. Oh, and of course this all occurs over Christmas. The best parts: Leary having to wear one of those wreaths with the candles on it during a holiday dinner, Kevin Spacey being Kevin Spacey.
- Planes, Trains & Automobiles. A marketing director with a stick up his bum is trying to make it home for the holidays when he encounters John Candy, and things go awry … as they tended to do in all John Candy movies. The best parts: John Candy, hands down.
